The trouble with trout
Illegal trafficking: In 2019, a Michigan fish dealer was sentenced to prison and ordered to pay over $1 million in restitution for illegally trafficking and selling lake trout and making false records.
Illegal fishing and poaching: In 2023, a man in New York was arrested for illegally catching and selling trout out of season after police found almost 40 pounds of illegally recovered fish. Similar historical cases exist, such as one from 1912 in Oregon where a man was in trouble for serving steelhead #TROUT to guests during a time of changing regulations.
Animal abuse: In 2024, a Tasmanian woman faced court on charges related to possessing and producing a "bestiality product" after a video involving a live brown trout went viral.
